Congratulations to Dr. Jia Ding on his successful PhD defense

Congratulations to Dr. Jia Ding on his successful PhD defenses entitled “Study of CdTe/MgCdTe Double-Heterostructure Solar Cells and an Epitaxial Lift-Off Technology for Thin-Film and Tandem Applications”. The group would like to gratefully thank Jia for his many contributions in the past years, and we wish him continued success in his future scientific work with Meta.

Congratulations to Stephen Schaefer for his victory in the 2021 Arizona State Championships road race

Stephen is a competitive amateur cyclist with multiple wins in regional road and cyclocross races.  Some of his more recent racing highlights include victories in the 2021 and 2019 Arizona State Championships road race and individual time trial, 2020 SWCCC road race omnium champion, and 2019 Southwest Collegiate Cycling Conference (SWCCC) cyclocross omnium champion.  In addition to Stephen’s research work he aspires to obtain a professional contract in cycling.

Dr. Stephen Schaefer joins the team

The group welcomes our new assistant research scientist, Dr. Stephen Schaefer. Stephen earned his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University in December of 2020. Stephen’s current research interests include the design and growth of tandem MgCdTe/amorphous Si solar cells and SiGeSn materials for photodetectors in the infrared spectrum.

A new paper has been selected as Featured and the editor’s pick by APL

Our new paper, entitled “Epitaxial lift-off CdTe/MgCdTe double heterostructures for thin-film and flexible solar cells applications”, has been selected as Featured and the editor’s pick by Applied Physics Letters(APL), and  additionally reported by Scilight. Congratulations to Jia, Cheng-Ying and Zheng for their nice work.

Tyler McCarthy receives an Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Award

We are excited to announce that MBE Optoelectronics Lab Ph.D. student, Tyler McCarthy, has been chosen to receive a highly selective Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Award. This award provides financial support to academically exceptional doctoral students who exhibit the potential to make substantial contributions within their field of study. Tyler will put his ARCS Funding towards a critical modeling software to further his research. Congratulations to Tyler!

Xin Qi and Nathan Rosenblatt join the team

The team welcomes new graduate students Xin Qi and Nathan Rosenblatt. Xin received his M.S. degree in Optics in 2019 and B.S degree in Astronomy in 2016 from Peking University, China. Nathan is pursuing a Master degree in Electrical Engineering at ASU. Both of them will work on solar cells.
